I remember the first time I saw Xander perform live; it was in Coffee Bay in The Transkei, over New Years. I was 19 years old, and had recently broken up with my first ever girlfriend. I think we all know what state I was in.
In the midst of the drinking, partying, and generally very epic Transkei New Years, I heard some inspired music drifting from the stage. It sounded like a show. A real show, not the kind of bands I was used to at the time. I stopped what I was doing and ran over to see what it was. That was the first time I saw Gazelle, and I loved it.
Now, some years later, Xander is living in The U.S. and doing his own thing. His sound has changed from the Gazelle sound that a lot of us will remember. And that’s not a bad thing. The above session is dripping of Chris Isaak, and it’s great.
Xander reached out to us a while ago, letting us know that he’d be in the country for a while to do some recording, and that he’d be keen to do a Popsicle Studio Session. My inner 19-year-old-Transkei-goer flipped.
Check out Xander Ferreira performing a track from his new solo material, Lonesome Lover, featuring Andre Geldenhuys, live at Popsicle Studios in Cape Town, South Africa.
