Earlier this year three of the most unlikely musicians teamed up to perform a series of intimate and stripped-down shows around Cape Town.
Each member of this trio is a power-house in their own right. They are none other than Toya Delazy, Albert Frost and Lee Thomson.
If you don’t know them all, then you know at least one. Toya Delazy is arguably South Africa’s biggest pop-star right now. Albert Frost is a South African Blues/Rock legend, and Lee Thomson has been involved a multitude of successful projects, from rock acts like Springbok Nude Girls and Hog Hoggidy Hog, to jazz shows with Kesivan Naidoo and more.
One can only guess how the three ended up playing together. They’ve all walked vastly different paths, but have all ended up at the top of their game, and are now sharing the stage, performing stripped down versions of their songs, as well as a few covers.
We had no idea if the project was a once-off thing, or if it would carry on for a while, so when we heard about it, we made moves to get them into the studio asap. It was a fascinating thing to watch. What came through most strongly was how excited all three were. The session was devoid of ego, it was just about three great musos getting in a room and enjoying the opportunity to make music together. It was refreshing, to say the least.
As it turns out, Toya will be performing with Lee in Europe in the coming weeks, and the two will arrive back in SA just in time to meet up with Albert to play Oppikoppi later this year. So if you didn’t have a reason to go before, you do now!
