Recently, we’ve had the pleasure of doing some work with a seriously talented group of individuals called The City.
Bonj Mpanza, Clement Carr, Ryan McArthur and Reuben Crowie are without a doubt some of Cape Town’s finest young musicians and if you haven’t heard of them by now, that should all be changing soon.
What is most admirable about The City, aside from their epic musicianship, is the genre that they are tackling. Imagine Little Dragon mixed with a bit of Snarky Puppy, with an afro twist. It’s an exciting idea, which the group have termed Future Afro.
The reason this is so noteworthy is that taking on a genre like this not only requires the skills of seasoned musicians, but also the subtle musical understanding that comes with this level of musicianship. The City’s music is intelligent, accessible and of the highest quality.
We at Popsicle TV are very excited about The City’s prospects and we look forward to following their success.
Later this week you can look forward to a video of them performing a track from their forthcoming EP (which they are launching this Friday) live in our studio, and next week we’ll be releasing a video of them performing a breathtaking Little Dragon cover.
But for now, check out this photo series that our guy Imraan Christian shot with the band in our studio.
