Joshua Grierson: Red Boots

A while back, maybe 3 or 4 years ago, I went to go watch Joshua Grierson perform at The Waiting Room in Cape Town. We sat down, not really knowing what to expect, but we had been told that “he was good.”

What followed was one of the most unforgettable shows I have ever attended. Joshua was on the tiny stage, just him and his guitar, and in his mind he was playing in his bedroom. He was playing for himself and, in doing so, blowing us away.

I remember Joshua started playing a particularly stand-out song, which I later found out was called “Red Boots.” I looked down the row I was sitting in and at least 2 people were crying. It was funny and moving at the same time.

Fast forward to the present day. Popsicle TV invites Joshua Grierson to come do a Popsicle Studio Session with one of his new projects “BIG EXIT.” While the rest of the band is setting up, I pull Joshua aside and say “Hey man, remember that time at The Waiting Room, blah blah blahghdjsj….. could you play that song afterwards? Just you and your guitar?”

He obliged.

I don’t know why I feel the need to communicate this story, or write in the first person (which we never do). I think it’s probably because that night at The Waiting Room, I spoke with Joshua about filming him playing that song, about filming music in general, “take-away” shows, video content, sharing music, and I think that was maybe the first seed planted for what later became Popsicle Studios and Popsicle TV.

I think after you watch the above video, you will see why Joshua was the catalyst. He’s overflowing with natural talent, the song is powerful, and Joshua is just weird enough to be totally captivating.

So thank you Joshua Grierson.

And thank you to everyone who has been paying attention to what we’ve been doing in the last while. I hope you find this song as moving as I do.
